Attention Coaches:
Please remember the mercy rule is an 8 goal difference. It is partly your responsibility to ensure that score sheets are not marked with more than an 8 goal advantage for one team. If a score sheet comes in with more than this, we will take the first 8 listed as scorers. We do not have time to verify the order players scored.

- Higher Division Cards: U12, U14, & U16 - Players can play unlimited games in a higher division (limit of 6 cards per team) and (a player may sign a card with only one team per division), and must have a Higher Division Card signed by both the coach and parent/guardian and in the hands of the league secretary 24 hours before game time, or at the very least given to the referee to be handed in with the score-sheet. The Call-up column must be checked off on the score sheet. Please read the Higher Division cards carefully.
- Eligibility for Play-offs: Players must have played 40 % of their regular season games in their registered division in order to play in the play-offs. If you have a call up playing in the playoffs make sure that the Higher Division Card is handed into the office 24 hours prior to playoffs – this includes semifinals. If it is not handed in and the player plays your team will forfeit the game. Again, read the Higher Division Card carefully.

- Game Results: The home coach is responsible for keeping a copy of the score sheet incase the GSL office needs to confirm information. At the end of the game both coach’s must have signed the score sheet.
- Rain Outs: Regardless of weather conditions, you must have your team make an appearance at the field; the decision to cancel the game will be made there by the referee – no exceptions. Home coaches must call in rained-out games, so that the League is aware of it for the purpose of standings and rescheduling. If the field committee calls the Glengarry Soccer League Office to cancel a game, a GSL representative will notify both teams by 5:30 pm. Shortage of players will not be accepted as a reason to postpone a game. You must forfeit. The GSL secretary will reschedule games within a 2-week period after the postponement. This will be enforced by the league!!!
- Mercy Rule: Once there is an 8-goal difference the game is officially over. At this point the coaches can agree to either turn the game into a practice or end the game. NO other goals will be counted after an 8 goal difference. However, discipline will continue to be recorded. This rule applies to all minor divisions.
- Playoffs and Championship Day: Playoffs will take place for a period of two weeks immediately after all regular season games have been played. A Championship Day will follow in where the two teams that make it to the finals in each division play to determine who wins the Championship. This date will be on your regular season schedule. The awards will also be handed out Championship day after the game at the field or in case of bad weather in the Alexandria Island Park Community Center.
Play Off Format for Minors
Ø If no team has a leading score at the end of regulation time, play off games will be decided by two 10 minutes sudden death. After 20 minutes are played, penalty shots will be used.
Ø For penalty shots, five shooters are chosen from the players on the field. If there is still a tie, then the shooters go one and one, with the players on the field until someone wins.
Ø Playoff games are on a one game knock-out basis. Those teams that move on will play a final championship game at the Alexandria Park.
Ø If more score sheets are needed because your team moves on, there are plenty available at the soccer office at 6 St. George St. W.

COACHING POINTERS
Paperwork: Please bring your rules with you. This is always handy to have in case you do not remember what the rules are. Have your score-sheets filled in before you arrive at the field for your home games; that way you can give the other coach the sheet right away.
Have call-up cards signed if you think that you might be short players at some point during the season. Don’t leave it to the day of the game to start looking for call-ups.
Call up cards can be handed in with the score-sheet, provided that it contains the proper signatures. A call-up card form only has to be turned in once that season for that specific player. In the case of Playoffs all call up cards must handed into the GSL office at least 24 hours before the first Playoff game (this includes semifinals).
Players have to be registered and paid 24 hours prior to their first game played – this means registration forms and money must be in the league secretary’s possession. Failure to comply will result in loss of game.
Equipment: Please look after the balls, sweaters, etc… Try not to take too many soccer balls to your games…….. You’ll likely go home with less than you came with. 2-3 balls are sufficient.
Should a player quit, get the sweater back immediately.
Try to collect all sweaters at the end of the last game to avoid having to pick them up later.
Score-sheets: Score sheets must be filled in at the start of the game. All names should be on the scoresheet as none can be added after half-time. If a name is not on the list, a player cannot enter the field of play after the start of the second half. If a name is on the list, the player can play even if there is only a few minutes left of the game. At the end of ever game, the names of all players who did not play MUST be crossed off all copies of the game sheet and have the referee fill in any cards, etc and then you will sign the score sheet, verifying that you agree with all the information written down.
Coaches and referees are to ensure that this is done as the number of games played and eligibility of a player to play in the playoffs is determined by the accuracy of the scoresheet.
******* If you have a player on your team who is also playing on a Hearts team, you MUST scratch their name off of your team list on the scoresheet if they were at a Hearts game and not yours…failure to do so will result in your team forfeiting the game.
Team Lists: Try to give each player a team list with phone numbers, so that you can pass information along more easily or for car-pooling.
Practices: Any practice is better than no practice. Work on trapping, kicking, passing, shooting, dribbling, etc… These are the essentials! Think up your own drills, or get some from the internet. Keep things simple. Get a helper (parent, student, sibling) to make notes during games of things to work on at practices. Encourage your players to practice at home.
Encourage Fair Play:
Good sportsmanship, teamwork, etc are important ideas for the players! Do not tolerate yelling at other players, coaches, parents and least of all officials.
Be Organized:
Aim to be at the field at least 15 minutes prior to game time, so that the kids can have a warm-up. Have an assistant to help make things easier for you.
Talking: Encourage your players to talk to each other on the field; and not chit chat, but rather let each other know that they have time, who is open for a pass etc.
Weather: Parents will have the final say whether or not they feel their child should play. However, the referee has the final say whether or not the game will go on. Games will not be cancelled because it is raining. There must be lightning in the area where the game is being played. Where it is raining it may not be raining in another area. Have your team show up to all games unless the league has contacted you.
Absences: Encourage your players to call you if they can’t make a game. It is common courtesy and allows you to make arrangements for call-up players to play for you, if your team will be short.
Cancellations: The only reasons that THE LEAGUE OFFICE may cancel a game are because of weather, or because of school. Trying to cancel a game because several of your players will be away on vacation is not permitted…this is why you are allowed to use call-ups. At the beginning of the season each representative is asked which dates they do not want games scheduled for, this is your chance to let us know. There will be no exception to the rule.
Any game that needs to be re-scheduled will be within 2 weeks of the original scheduled date. The coaches may agree on a date that works for both teams, and notify the GSL office, or the office will choose a date.
Unacceptable:
The League will not tolerate coaches, players or fans that are verbally or physically abusive towards a referee, player, fan or coach. If there is some concern about a call the referee made, calmly discuss your problem with the referee after the game. Do not yell at them or make them feel uncomfortable, otherwise they will quit refereeing and this is continuing to be a problem. Everyone makes mistakes – keep in mind that it’s a learning experience for everyone involved and mutual respect must be encouraged.
As a coach, make sure that you have a good understanding of the rules before you question the referee on an issue.
Good Sportsmanship:
Both the coach and the players have a duty to conduct themselves with good sportsmanship. After every game the players and the coaches should shake hands and say “good game” to the opposing team. If the game is a blow out, the stronger team should move the players around and try to make it a level playing field. For example, move your forwards back and move your defense up, or change your goalie (maybe he/she would like to play out for a change). Try not to add insult to injury to the team that is already losing 7-0. Tell your players to practice their passing skills and instead of encouraging them to score explain to them that they have already won and that they should take the opportunity to practice other skills. It is the coach’s responsibility to encourage good sportsmanship. If a player chooses to be un-sportsmanlike take him off the field until he/she cools down, and explain to the player the consequences of being un-sportsmanlike.
Names in Newspaper:
The GSL is trying to promote players to play as a team and not as an individual. This year we w ill not be giving the newspaper the names of scorers, but instead publishing only game scores. The team as a whole works together for each goal and the team as a whole will be recognized. If you need to discuss this, call the GSL office. The newspaper welcomes any write up that a coach wishes to submit about their team.
Smoking: Smoking is not permitted on the sidelines by any coach or team assistant.
Please encourage your parents to also follow this rule.
15.Nominations: Near the end of the season, coaches will fill in nominations for the best players for each position. Nominating and voting will be done through e-mail in order to determine award winners at the end of the season.
